Frequently Asked Questions
Friends of St. Lawrence Hockey FAQ
We
hope that this page provides a better idea of what
we are all about, and how we function. Be sure to
contact us if you have any further questions.
We
hear the term “booster club” used in connection with
FRIENDS OF ST.
LAWRENCE HOCKEY.
What exactly is
a booster club?
A booster club is an organization that provides
opportunities for fans of a
college or university athletic team to provide
tangible support while remaining in compliance with
National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)
regulations governing such activity. Think of it as
a bridge between the athletic program(s) and fans.
What are some of the things that a booster club can
do?
It can contribute funds to a
program over and above those allocated by the
school, enabling a coach to make purchases or do
things he/she otherwise could not. It can sponsor
events that bring the team and the public together.
It can organize hospitality for players’ parents.
Things like that. Making the environs more
attractive for players and parents can have big
implications for retention, and even word-of-mouth
aspects for future recruiting.
How about the FRIENDS?
As
mentioned earlier, we make financial donations for
things like equipment and
facilities, we sponsor social events
involving teams and the public, and bus trips to
away games. We distribute signs, noise-makers, and
the like to fans at games, and operate a sales booth
specializing in logo clothing and souvenirs.
Which of the teams -- men’s or
womens – do the FRIENDS support?
Both.
How is FRIENDS OF
ST. LAWRENCE HOCKEY
organized?
We
have a constitution, and are governed by a board of
12 members that meets monthly to plan events and
review activities. The board annual elects officers
in the form of a chair, vice-chair, secretary, and
treasurer, and appoints committee chairs for such
things as membership, newsletter, post-game parties,
and golf tournament, among others. Board members
normally serve three-year terms. Members-at-large
wishing to serve on the board can have their names
considered by contacting a board member (names
thereof are listed on this website’s “Contacts”
page, and in
Center Ice, our quarterly newsletter.
What would I be expected to do as a member of
FRIENDS?
As much or as little
as you want. Everyone pays
annual dues; the schedule can be found on the “Be a
FRIEND!” page, and in
Center Ice.
From there on it’s up to you: stay on the
sidelines knowing that your dues are being put to
work. Or if you wish, actively assist in hosting or
fund-raising activities. Workers and organizers are
always needed. It’s your call!
What’s in it for me?
That’s a natural and reasonable question. Perhaps
the biggest benefit is the feeling that you are
playing a part in the teams’ success. Your dues
money is being spent to help the teams; you helped
to raise even more money by working on fund-raising;
perhaps you helped to arrange and stage the annual
banquet that everyone enjoyed so much. And beyond
that (let’s be frank) there’s that feeling of being
a bit of an “insider.” A feeling
of belonging that comes over you every time you
enter the rink. And last but not least,
FRIENDS’ membership can introduce you to a whole lot
of very nice people whose enthusiasm matches (or
possibly, even exceeds) your own.
What are the dues?
With
three levels of membership, dues range from $25 to
$150. Everyone gets the newsletter,
Center Ice;
other premiums depend upon level. For details, see
the “Be a FRIEND!” page. Memberships run from
September 1st until August 31st
of the following year.
